------------------------------------------

Oh no, the net of doom is here! It claimed many of my fellow fish before. I swim furiously, trying to avoid it. My fins waggle in frustration as it swoops down upon me. I can't get out! Help!

Above me, through the water, I hear sounds. Sounds like human speech. I can understand it, after being in this aquarium for so long. Voices.

“This one is pretty, isn't it, Sho-chan!” exclaims one excited voice.

“Oh, yes, it is, Aiba-chan.” says another voice gently that I assume belongs to Sho-chan. “Do you think we should get it?”

I'm being lowered into a round glass bowl that has colourful pebbles on the bottom, as well as some seaweed. Realizing that I'm actually quite hungry, I try nibbling it. Bleh!

“This fish reminds me of Riida! Eating everything it can see, too.” Another voice comes out.

“Yes, doesn't it, Jun-chan!” agrees a fourth voice.

I'm suddenly aware of four faces looking at me through the transparent surface. I swim right up close, to try to see them more clearly. One of them has lovely eyes and a beam on his face. I think he's the one they call Aiba-chan. The one with the gentle sunshine smile and smart looking face should be Sho-chan, and those thick eyebrows must belong to Jun-chan. It really is a distinct feature. I'll try to listen in to their conversation to find out the name of that last one, the one with the long eyelashes.

“Don't you think this will make a great present for Riida, Nino-chan?” Aiba-chan turns to the fourth one. [So, his name is Nino-chan!]

“Yes, I guess,” answers Nino-chan, not looking up from that little silver box he was holding. There are round things he presses with his fingers. Fingers, I think with scorn. Fins are so much better.

So, I'm to be a present for this Riida? Well, I just hope he knows how to treat fish well, and not neglect them.

But the next sentence I hear shocks me.

“Are you sure it wouldn't be better to buy a fishing rod instead?”

Fishing rod? I panic, whirling around the limited space I had. This Riida, he, he CATCHES fish!

“Hey, that's funny,” Aiba-chan says and looks at me with an amused smile on his face. “It's like it could understand what you just said, and it doesn't wanna be caught.”

You got that quite right, Aiba-chan. Thinking that maybe he could be my savior, I swim around happily, until I finally realize it's futile anyway because he can’t understand me. Oh well, I hope it shall be quick and painless then. I resign myself to my fate.

Their voices float back to me through my panic. “No. I still say get this fish! It's so cute! And if you don't want Riida to have it, then I shall keep it.” Aiba-chan pouts.

Sho-chan puts his arms around Aiba-chan, comforting my sulking would-be-savior. “Its okay, Aiba-chan,” I hear. “If Riida doesn't like it then you can have it, okay?”

“Okay!” Hearing Sho-chan’s words Aiba-chan suddenly looks happier and smiles. Those eyes seriously look good when they sparkle like that.

I wonder who I'll end up with, then.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The whole thing is lifted up, and I am carried outside, to their car. The water sloshes about as the car starts. I look up and see Aiba-chan looking down at me, one arm around the glass. We spend the whole trip together on the back seat.

I don't want to belong to Riida. Aiba-chan is the only owner I want.

After half an hour, we stop in front of a two storey house. The mere sight of the building scares me. I know that a fish killer lives inside. Even though there are pink and red flowers on the bushes around the porch, they do nothing to cheer up the place. The four people shuffle up to the door with me in their midst. It never seemed so long to just move a few metres before.

Sho-chan presses the doorbell while Aiba-chan carries me. It's then I notice he's whispering to me.

“If Riida forgets to feed you even once I'll hit him! He can be so dozy sometimes...” and “Don't worry, I'll take care of you if Riida doesn't want you, okay?”

The seconds stretch past. Finally, the door opens, revealing a young man with a round face and faraway expression looking at them blankly.

“Riida! Happy birthday~!” The four of them yell.

“Oh.” Riida says, a little bit startled with the surprise. He doesn’t expect them to remember his birthday because he himself sometimes forgets about it. “Thanks.”

Riida takes us to the living room when suddenly an older woman comes in. “Satoshi!” she begins. “What did I tell you about... Oh!” [I assume she’s talking to Riida; no one else responds.]

She's seen me and frowns. “No, Satoshi can't possibly keep it; it's such a dear thing! He'd probably try to fish it out the moment I have my back turned.”

I flap around to get a better view of Riida, he pouts but doesn’t say anything. My heart beats faster. Does that mean...does that mean I can stay with Aiba-chan?

“I'm sorry, dears, but one of you will have to keep it.” The lady's voice was gentle but firm. She gets Riida out of the room before continuing, “I have spare presents for you to give him, though...”

YES! YES! YES! I think. I'm so ecstatic I bubble at Aiba-chan in excitement.

“YES! YES! YES!” Aiba-chan echoes my thoughts. “I'll keep it~” He punches the air.

The other three look amused. “Well, it’s the first time I’ve seen Aiba-chan more interested in a fish than Riida!” Sho-chan exclaims.
