Summary: Sho and Aiba growing up with a piano.
Notes: Each section represents a different period of time in their lives, they kind of grow up knowing each other. Apologies in advance for any OOC, I just wrote it very quickly today >< based off the song 听你弹钢琴 by 欧得洋, lyrics, translation and a link to the song can be found here
------------------------------------------
“Twin-kle twin-kle lit-tle star…” Aiba slowly picked out the melody on the piano in the school’s music room with a finger. Sitting there in front of the piano, fully concentrated on the black and white keys, he failed to notice someone walk in.
“Aiba-chan, what are you doing?” Sho walked towards the piano, where the boy was perched, his feet dangling slightly off the ground.
“Oh, Sho-chan! I’m learning the piano!” Aiba beamed at Sho, completely undisturbed by the interruption. “Want to see?” He patted the seat beside him, and Sho slowly climbed up beside him, taking extra care not to look down.
“Okay! Here we go!” Aiba turned his full attention onto the piano again and slowly picked out the notes. Sho patiently watched until Aiba reached the last “How I won-der what you are” and clapped. Aiba giggled. “Thanks, Sho-chan! But I wish I could be better. I know I’m slow...”
“Don’t worry, Aiba-chan. Teacher always says practice makes perfect, so you should just keep practising!” Sho patted Aiba’s shoulder comfortingly, earning himself another sunshine smile. Aiba nodded.
“When I learn properly, I’ll play it for you!”
The two of them smiled at each other, the promise sparkling in their hearts.
-----
Two schoolboys sat on a grassy patch at break time. One held a thick book on his lap, and was studying it intently, while the other did the same to a piano score.
Intent as he was on his textbook, Sho jumped a little when he felt Aiba’s hand touch his own. Aiba didn’t look up while his fingers tapped out a melody on Sho’s palm.
Sho let him, watching the other’s childlike expression as he did so, tongue poking out slightly in concentration.
A smile formed on Sho’s lips as he went back to the economics textbook.
-----
The sun blazed on the surroundings, causing the air to shimmer with heat. Within the cool air conditioning of the Sakurai mansion, two high school boys sat in front of the grand piano. A scorebook was open in front of them.
The taller one began to play, while the other watched.
Aiba’s ten fingers fell on the black and white keys, and drew out the printed melody, adding his own flavour to the sounds.
As the stumbling music echoed around the house, Sho smiled. He couldn’t lie, the music was inelegant, but it was the most heartwarming sound he had ever heard.
-----
“Here, have some karaage.” Sho held out a greasy paper bag and offered it to Aiba, who smiled gratefully. He turned around on the piano seat and accepted the food.
“How does Sho-chan always seem to know when I’m down?” Aiba asked with his mouth half full, his hand already halfway back into the bag.
“I listen to your piano playing.” Sho grinned. “When you play the high notes, it usually means you’re happy, and if you use the low notes, it means your emotions are low too.”
-----
Sho ran his hands through his hair in frustration. Things just weren’t going well at work.
When the clock ticked to his lunch break, he took his phone and walked to a secluded spot outside the building, pressing a speed dial number on the way.
“Hello?” Aiba’s voice came down the line. “What’s up, Sho-chan?”
Sho couldn’t help but smile at the voice of his favourite person. “Hey, Aiba-chan, Could you do me a favour and play the piano for me?”
“Oh? Sure,” Aiba was puzzled, but he did as Sho said, placing his phone on top of the piano before softly drawing out a soothing melody.
Sho smiled. Whenever Aiba played, it seemed like he was bringing him on a vacation.
The notes gradually slowed to a halt. In that empty space, if Sho closed his eyes, he could feel the love from the other end.
“Thanks, Aiba-chan. I’ll see you at home later.”
