------------------------------------------
An awkward silence fell over the room, broken by the sound of the door being pushed open. Sensing the uncomfortable atmosphere, Ohno’s mother enquired, "Would anyone like some porridge?"
Without waiting for a reply, she passed around bowls of gently steaming porridge. Aiba accepted his with a grateful "Thanks!"
Nino, on the other hand, needed some persuasion, but he finally took the bowl.
The room was then silent except for the sounds of people eating their porridge.
------------------------------------------
Aiba managed to corner Nino at work the next day.
“I’ve been thinking about our conversation on the way back from the hospital, and I think you should go see Ohno again, you know? It’s not good to leave things like this…”
Nino stared at him. “Huh?”
“Trust me, it’s not good to leave things hanging. I did that once, and it changed my life completely.” A sad, faraway look came into his eyes. Nino knew that he was thinking about someone he rarely mentioned that had brought him such sadness. Nino couldn’t remember Aiba ever being as unhappy as that time.
“I’ll go. After work.”
------------------------------------------
A few stars twinkled in the sky, as if encouraging Nino along on his way. He hesitantly pushed the open door to Ohno's hospital room and looked in. He moved slowly and as soundlessly as possible to the side of the bed, hoping that Ohno was asleep, and placed a small bunch of flowers on the bedside table.
A sudden movement by Ohno caused Nino to jump slightly.
A pair of sleepy eyes gazed up at him from the bed.
"I heard you coming in," said Ohno simply.
"I, ah, just wanted to..." Nino was at a loss for words.
Ohno put him out of his misery. "We were both in the wrong. Let's just apologise together on the count of three. One, two, three..."
"I'm sorry!" Both voices rang out in unison.
Nino felt like a huge weight had been lifted from his heart just then. Unknown to him, Ohno felt just the same.
------------------------------------------
For a while after that, both of them felt no need for words; each other’s presence was enough.
As Ohno lay on the bed, wondering whether he should say something, his eyes fell on Nino, who was sitting right beside him. He wondered whether it was his own wishful thinking, but it looked like one of Nino’s hands was moving slightly closer to his own.
A tingle ran through Ohno’s fingers as Nino’s hand made contact, and Ohno’s heart started accelerating. Calm down, he told himself. It’s not like he never touched you before.
But this time was different; Nino’s fingers hooked themselves through Ohno’s, and Nino’s eyes looked directly into Ohno’s.
“So, I heard from Aiba that you met with the accident on the way to my house…” Nino waited for acknowledgement from the older man and then continued, “Exactly why were you going there?”
“I...” Ohno’s throat went dry. “I wanted to...say something...to you.”
