Ohno could feel his face grow warm and his heart thumping powerfully in his chest as he tried to summon the courage to say those words.
“I…” He started, and found that he couldn’t say any more.
This won’t do, he thought to himself. Since this is as good a chance as any other…
“I …mmph…you,” Ohno managed, mumbling the middle part.
“What was that? I didn’t hear you,” Nino said, teasing him.
He closed his eyes and tried to recall all the times they’d spent together, to emphasise what he wanted to say. The time they went to fish, and Nino had gotten seasick; the time he went to Nino’s piano concert, he remembered how the melody flowing from beneath Nino’s fingers had enchanted him, how he’d felt so wonderful, so free.
Nino was looking at him expectantly, and he knew he couldn’t drag it for any longer.
“I…” Ohno took a deep breath. “I think I love you.”
He searched the younger man’s face for a reaction. There was a long pause which seemed like an eternity to Ohno.
With an incredulous look on his face, Nino eventually broke the silence.
“You had to get yourself nearly killed just to say you love me?”
The sentence stung like iodine on an open wound. Hurt, Ohno turned his head away from Nino. He hadn’t known what to expect, but this was too much.
“Ne…” Nino reached out and touched the older man’s shoulder. “I didn’t know you’d take it like that.”
He added, “It’s just… I love you too, and I don’t want to see you hurt.”
Hearing that, Ohno turned his head back again and looked at Nino, his vision blurred with tears he was trying to force back.
“Really?” The older man’s voice trembled slightly.
“Baka. You don’t have to cry about such things, you know,” Nino patted Ohno’s head awkwardly, and suddenly pulled him into a warm embrace. “There, there.”
